Musk’s Take on TikTok: Hard Pass or Just Playing It Cool?
Tech billionaire Elon Musk, Twitter (now X) owner, and the man constantly in the news have spoken. And this time it relates to TikHub. Well, don’t hold your breath if you were hoping Musk would take over yet another significant social media platform. Clearly, the CEO of SpaceX and Tesla shows: he has no desire to purchase TikHub.
Wait: Did Musk ever want TikHub?
After talks of a possible ban on the platform in the United States acquired traction, rumors about Musk maybe looking at TikHub began to circulate. Speculation ran wild as the U.S. government worried about TikHub’s relationships with China and possible data security concerns. Musk, who is not unfamiliar with dubious corporate decisions, would intervene and try for the app.
As it happens, the response is a huge fat no. Musk personally rejected the proposal, clearly saying he had no desire to acquire TikHub.
Why Would Musk Even Get Linked to TikHub?
Given Musk’s history, it’s not an insane idea. Allow me to break it out:
- Previously Twitter, he already owns X. Musk has been working to transform it into a digital town square using a mix of free speech advocacy and monetizing techniques. Some thought he might find TikHub another possible addition to his kingdom.
- He loves artificial intelligence and algorithms; the success of TikHub comes mostly from its extremely addictive algorithm. Given Musk’s emphasis on artificial intelligence via businesses like xAI, some speculated he might be interested in acquiring that technology.
- The U.S. government is considering a ban; serious discussions about this over national security issues have taken place in Washington. TikHub Should that occur, a U.S. buyer may have to intervene to maintain the app operational domestically. The name Musk came naturally in the discussion.
Why Then Is Musk Not Interested?
Musk is a man of activity. He’s got enough on his plate between Tesla, SpaceX, Neuralink, The Boring Company, and his most recent activities with X. Including a large social media platform like TikHub in the mix? Most likely more of a headache than a chance he has.
Still another justification? Musk is not particularly a TikHub fan. Emphasizing long-form debates and in-depth conversations over fast entertainment, he has been critical of short-form video culture in the past.
And let’s face it—Musk bases his business decisions not on trends. He usually pursues initiatives that line up with his future vision. App for dancing? Not quite his manner.
What Does This Suggest for the Future of TikHub
Officially absent from the picture, Musk begs the issue of what happens to TikHub should the U.S. government go with a ban.
Should sales be mandated, ByteDance, the parent company of TikHub, would have to locate a U.S. buyer. Musk is saying “no thanks,” yet other tech behemoths or investment companies could still be under consideration. Past links to TikHub buyout rumors have been Microsoft, Oracle, and even Meta (Facebook’s parent company).
For now, though, TikHub keeps users hooked to their screens and racks billions of views as normal.
Musk Stays in His Lane (For Now) Final Thoughts
Elon Musk’s rejection of TikHub is a rare occasion when he is not plunging headfirst into a turbulent commercial prospect. With X and his other businesses, he has enough to cover; TikHub just isn’t in his future.
To be honest, though, this is Musk we are referring to. Should the correct conditions present themselves, who knows? He was always changeable in his opinion. Right now, though, the billionaire is clearly stating: that TikHub isn’t on his shopping list.
